Beating the Post Holiday Blues

It doesn’t seem five minutes since you were jetting off for a fortnight’s sun on the Mediterranean coast – but somehow it’s over already. Before you trudge wearily back to work, we take a look at five ways to beat the post-holiday blues and feel more motivated and productive in the office.

1. Bring some sunshine into the office

Who says you have to leave the sunshine behind? It’s time to decorate your desk with something that gives you that feel-good factor.  Studies have shown that looking at an image of something that makes us happy can stimulate our brain – and actually make us more productive and focused.

So why not get a nice framed photo of something from your holiday – whether it’s a photo of you and your family on the beach or an incredible view you experienced – and place it on your desk.

2. Launch a new project

Rather than coming back to the same old routine, maybe now is the time to mention that new project you’d like to launch.  Having a new goal to work towards will create a sense of anticipation which could be the perfect replacement for all the excitement you were feeling during your pre-holiday countdown.

 3. Keep up that fitness routine

Chances are you started up a new fitness routine before hitting the beach. While the natural reaction post-holiday is to cut-down on exercise and start indulging in fast food, now’s the time to step it up again.  It wasn’t just the anticipation of a summer break that was making you feel good – a healthier, more active lifestyle is proven to boost mood, lower stress levels and improve your general sense of wellbeing.

4. Harness that sunbathing state of mind

You don’t have to leave that relaxed state of mind on the beach just because you’re back in the office. In fact, it might pay to bring it back with you. Next time you’re feeling overwhelmed with the multitude of tasks on your to-do list, take a couple of minutes to remember that light, relaxed feeling you experienced when you were lying on the sand, listening to the waves and enjoying the warmth of the sun.

After all, not only is office daydreaming a very common occurrence (even senior management admit to doing it), but it can also help you to be more focused and to solve work-based problems more effectively.

 5. Hit delete

One thing most of us dread when returning to the office after a break is that backlog of emails. What seems like a steady stream over the course of a single day seems to build up to an insurmountable challenge when you’re away for a week.  There’s only one thing for it; get in early on your first day back and tackle that e-clutter straight away, so that you can start your working week with an orderly inbox.

For those of us lucky enough to have our office at Ransom Wood we can also find some motivation and inspiration from our great surroundings.  With 70 acres of natural woodland right outside your door a walk in the woods can help melt away the stresses and strains of the shock of returning to work after your holiday.  If you’re looking to relocate give our friendly team a call on 01623 675304 and check out our web site to see what’s currently available.

Still love to walk around. I used to live in the big house at the top of the drive, it was Oak House then and I nursed at Ransom Hospital , Byron Ward which was on the left side of Ransom Hall car park. Oak House used to be Sisters accommodation. I think the main chef lived upstairs when I lived there and just me downstairs mostly. I loved it but had to keep my kitchen door closed because of the squirrels. Loved looking down the drive out of my bedroom and lounge windows, beautiful in Autumn and when it snowed, I worked at Ransom Hospital until it closed in 1987. Wonder why Oak House was later named Ash House? Lovely dining at Forever Green in the grounds whilst I reminisce.
