Apparently we are a nation of miseries on a Monday morning. According to a recent survey by Mind, the mental health charity, for many office workers the start of the Monday morning blues begins on a Sunday. Apparently 66% of UK workers experience a slump in mood as the weekend draws to a close. Mind describes these workers as suffering from the Sunday Blues.
Finding Monday as the most stressful day of the week and hating their job were the two main reasons why workers dread the start of the working week. The survey also revealed some more surprising statistics associated with Sunday Blues. Despite commanding the highest salaries across the UK, Londoners were most likely to dread the return to work with more of than half of them admitting to hating Mondays. And some Londoners do more than just dread Mondays, they will actively avoid it with 22% admitting that they’ve made an excuse to get out of going to work at least once in the last 12 months. One in ten of these even admit to doing this repeatedly, missing Monday in the office between 3-5 times in the last year.
Workers aged 25-34 are the most likely to avoid Mondays with more than a quarter throwing a sickie to get out of going to work. For 1 in 3 of those surveyed it isn’t work that presents the problem its actually the office itself and this group have asked to work from home on a Monday purely to avoid facing the office environment.
