One real bonus we have here at Ransom Wood is free parking for all in abundance. You’re not so lucky if you work in Nottingham as on 1st April this year the Workplace Parking Levy came into force. This meant that companies with 11 or more parking spaces for employees would have to pay Nottingham City Council £288 a year per space under the scheme. The levy was opposed by many businesses who claim it is an unnecessary expense during tough economic times.
Many employers have decided to pass on some or all of the charge to their staff while some have reduced their numbers of car parking spaces.
The council plans to ring fence the funds raised from the scheme for local transport improvements including an extension to the tram network. Its also expected to ease congestion in the City whilst also promoting and encouraging the use of more sustainable, environmentally friendly forms of transport.
There are exemptions and discounts for some NHS premises and emergency services and also if spaces are for fleet vehicles or disabled drivers.
Over the next three years the figure of £288 is expected to increase to £334, £364 and £381.
At our own offices at Ash House we have 15 spaces which would amount to a cost of £4320 for the first year alone. All extra cost for the company to either bear the brunt of or take the decision to pass on to its employees at a time when budgets are already extremely stretched.
Officials now admit that the levy will not raise as much money as expected in its first year with £8 million the expected figure rather than £10 million. Employers have licensed 45,500 spaces at more than 3,000 premises around the city. Of these, the council said 28,000 will be fully chargeable, which is thousands down on the figure for previous estimates, with the remainder qualifying for a discount.
If you are considering relocating your business Ransom Wood is only a 30 minute drive from Nottingham and is ideally placed for accessing all the major road networks. And, just to remind you again, we have FREE parking!
