Introducing Andy Hollis

Andy has been working within the environmental and land-based sector for over 30 years, working as a forester, arborist, conservationist, landscaper and project officer for a variety of community based organisations, amongst other things.

He is currently working in partnership with Vibrant Warsop, a local Community Interest Company and has also worked with a variety of conservation based organisations, Friends of groups and schools, mainly improving the land and offering nature based training and experiences across Sherwood. He has also worked with the Sherwood Forest Trust for many years.

As well as all that he is a freelance tutor with Inspire, developing and delivering a range of free, environmentally based programmes under the Miner2Major scheme. Courses include Nature-walks and Foraging

You’re probably wondering how he finds the time to undertake estate maintenance across the site. Andy commented

“Working with Charles and the team at Ransomwood is too good an opportunity to miss out on. I have had a lifelong passion for nature and its promotion and protection and I find that the ethos of the management team, with regards to the sensitive way the site is managed, mirrors my own passions and ambitions. The world would be a better place if we all took the time to consider our impact on the environment and looked at ways in which we can encourage and protect the natural beauty of our fragile planet, alongside minimising our impact in these difficult times”.

“I am proud to work on site and strive continually to meet the demands of maintenance around the estate. I would not be able to do this if it wasn’t for the dedication and hard work of my small team, alongside the patience of Charles and his team and of course you, the tenants”.

Andy is also passionate about supporting the development of people. He offers volunteer, work experience and training to those wanting to either change career or just wanting to get into the environmental and land based sector. The people that you see working with him are being supported on this journey.

“As you can appreciate, it is both challenging and rewarding working with people with limited skills within the sector. But enthusiasm and passion are valuable attributes and go a long way to getting the job done. It is great to work with others that want to improve the world, at the same time as improving their own skills, knowledge and experience”.

Still love to walk around. I used to live in the big house at the top of the drive, it was Oak House then and I nursed at Ransom Hospital , Byron Ward which was on the left side of Ransom Hall car park. Oak House used to be Sisters accommodation. I think the main chef lived upstairs when I lived there and just me downstairs mostly. I loved it but had to keep my kitchen door closed because of the squirrels. Loved looking down the drive out of my bedroom and lounge windows, beautiful in Autumn and when it snowed, I worked at Ransom Hospital until it closed in 1987. Wonder why Oak House was later named Ash House? Lovely dining at Forever Green in the grounds whilst I reminisce.

Brilliant place, they have all sorts of businesses there. A cafe, hypnotherapy, hypnopuncture as well many others. Worth a drive up just to see what's there. Furthermore, it's in lovely surroundings.
