Rick Goodwin spent two days carving this amazing piece for us from Red Oak which was recently felled at Ransomwood in order to replant with native oak woodland.
So what is the Green Man?
The Green Man motif has many variations. Found in many cultures from many ages around the world, the Green Man is often related to natural vegetative deities. It is primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of growth each spring. Some speculate that the mythology of the Green Man developed independently in the traditions of separate ancient cultures and evolved into the wide variety of examples found throughout history.
The Green Man is also associated with Robin Hood and as we are in the heart of ancient Sherwood, we wanted to use sculpture that represents our Ancient Culture and our commitment to caretaking our part of the Forest and its community.
Before the written word was brought in by other cultures, our Celtic ancestors used to pass on their knowledge and history by the word of mouth, often through storytelling. We want to create a conversation which enshrines our story and enriches our local and business community in the process.
The detail in this carving is really amazing, take a look and see what else you can spot.
